As a contract manufacturer focused on always doing what they say they will do and delivering the highest quality products and service, Veris Manufacturing would not settle for anything but the best automatic optical inspection solution. They found Koh Young and they haven’t looked back since.
Veris Manufacturing firmly believes, by building and inspecting to the highest standard, they can be certain that every product leaving the factory is more than fit for the purpose. That determined commitment to quality, combined with a total focus on delivering on their promise, has allowed Veris to grow and thrive in the competitive contract manufacturing space in Southern California.
As Executive Vice President, Amanda Brewer says “Our differentiator is that we do what we say we’re going to do. So, when we tell a customer or a vendor that something is going to happen, we do everything we can, and we will jump through hoops if needed to ensure that that does indeed happen for them.”
Much of what Veris does is advanced manufacturing, for industries like aviation, military, medical and space – markets with mission critical products and understandably high standards. Veris is ITAR approved and has the highest quality certification, NADCAP Electronics. They are also certified to AS9100 and ISO 13485. They build to the tighter tolerances of IPC Class 3, and inspect to Class 3 or Class 2, depending on the customer requirement.
EVP Amanda Brewer adds “when boards are really easy, anybody could build them, so it’s easier to move those jobs around. When boards are more difficult and more challenging, it also takes ahigher level of expertise to be able to build them.”
Selecting the Right 3D AOI Solution
Veris had used 2D inspection for some time and had started to recognize real restrictions, particularly around measuring solder fillets and solder volume. With the 3D system that Veris chose, the Koh Young Zenith 2, they can accurately measure the devices.
Vargha Samimi, Quality Engineering Manager at Veris Manufacturing said, “False calls had been a big problem with the 2D machine. We had to go through all these calls manually one at a time to make sure that it’s actually a defect. Now the number of false calls has fallen substantially.” Adding, “we’re now able to control our process better. We can tighten up the tolerances to get better results.”
When Vargha Samimi looked for the right AOI solution for their production he knew he wanted to:
- Resolve excessive false calls
- Gain insight into solder fillets and volume
- Minimize programming time
- Reduce production cycle time
- Provide user friendly software
It was important to Vargha to have a system that was right for the company and delivered on their technical needs, while also providing a great operator experience. Afterall, these are the people programming and running the system on a daily basis. Their confidence in the system is essential to its successful deployment.
And the Finalist Are…
Veris selected a shortlist of machines and brought them each onsite for an evaluation.
Vargha Samimi said “We found that with our process, Koh Young was a better fit. Basically, we ran the machines side-by-side. The results on the Koh Young were more stable, more repeatable, and the consistency was there.” Adding “We decided to go ahead and get the Zenith 2 with side cameras for larger sized boards. By having the Zenith 2, we’re able to get a better shot and do extra inspection in any area. It’s improved our solder joint inspection drastically.”
Prior to deploying their Koh Young AOI, Veris had regularly needed to look at boards under a scope to check solder workmanship, even after 2D AOI inspection. Now they’ve stepped away from that process and rely on their Zenith 2 to get the inspection right, the first time, every time.
The operators have now worked with the machine long enough to have built trust and confidence. If the board they put in passes as good, they know it’s good, and they can move on! The net result is that their time is better utilized and redeployed into higher value operations.
In summing up his experience with Koh Young, Vargha Samimi said “It’s been a great experience. I had not worked with Koh Young before, but when we were doing the demo and doing all the test runs, I found out that Koh Young was very stable and the results were very repeatable and consistent, and that stood out from other competitors.” Vargha added, “we have seen a great increase in our throughput just by using one machine, so I can only see us having more machines, and that is going to make our lives even easier. I’d happily recommend Koh Young to my peers.”
